I was fascinated to read a recent article on the My Builder website quoting stats

supporting the view that DIY can lead directly to couples breaking up.

Now, we all know that tackling major DIY projects can be stressful but the research found that half of all people in a relationship said their sex life had suffered as a result of tensions with their partner over such joint ventures, with 8% saying it was a total passion killer.

The report found one in ten UK couples who undertook a DIY project together came close to a breakup and that 7% did actually split up. Over three-quarters (77%) admitted they had furious rows with their partner during a project with 15% confessing they were constantly at each other’s throats.

No less than 58% said that they would never undertake DIY with their partner again. 14% said that the mere thought of DIY made them stressful and one in six sensible homeowners said they thought any financial saving from doing DIY jobs was simply not worth the aggravation.

So if you know a couple considering undertaking a major DIY project or some home improvements, such as plastering, then you might want to point out that employing a professional could save their relationship, as well as resulting in a much better job!
