I know that each trade has its own jargon and it can sometimes be confusing for the layman.

So this month I thought I’d briefly explain some of the more commonly used jargon phrases in the plastering trade.

• Blown – this is the state of plaster or cement rendering that is no longer adhering to the wall behind it.
• Chase – this describes a trench dug into plaster or masonry making a space for the laying of cabling.
• Cornice – this is a horizontal moulding between the ceiling and the top of the wall.
• This is a shaped decorative moulding made of wood or plaster. It fits between the ceiling and top of a wall.
• Dry lining – this describes the method of attaching plaster boards to metal or timber frameworks to create partition walls or ceilings.
• Filler – this is the material used to smooth over small imperfections in a wall.
• Limewash – a mixture of lime and water used to coat outside walls.
• Render – this is the first rough coat of cement-based render applied as a protective coating on external walls.
• Stucco – this is a smooth render or cement applied to external walls which often resembles stones.
