I am often asked the difference between plaster and drywall and which is best. It all depends on the nature of the job in hand, the budget and any time constraints.

Plastering is, of course, a tried and tested method which has been in use for hundreds of years. It creates a strong, durable finish and is often the preferred choice for older and period properties. It can be expensive, though, as it is a labour intensive process.

Drywalling, also known as drylining, involves attaching large pieces of plasterboard to wooden studs to create a smooth, seamless look. The main advantage over traditional plastering is that it is quick to install. Most new building developments incorporate drywalling.

So which is best? Traditional plastering is time consuming with subsequent increased labour costs. There can also be delays in cold weather as it may take even longer than usual to dry and this delay can affect other works scheduled to be going on in the building.

If speed and cost are the priority then plasterboard is the better option. However, bear in mind that it is not easy to fix or attach things to it, such as shelving and radiators.
