Not got a clue what I am talking about? It’s a plasterer’s thing so let me explain.

A hawk, also known as a hand board, is the flat looking tool that a plasterer uses in combination with a trowel to achieve a smooth finish of plaster on a wall. The hawk holds the plaster ready for use.

Metal hawks are somewhat heavier than plastic ones but give a solid feel in the hand. They tend to be longer lasting than the plastic type and some have ridged surfaces to stop the plaster from falling off. An experienced plasterer may well prefer a smooth surface however.

Plastic hawks have the advantage of being lighter to use and so easier to use if the job is a long one. They are also significantly cheaper than metal and this can be a crucial factor, especially if the user has a tendency to leave kit at a job or lose them.

For the novice I would always recommend a plastic hawk. If you are an experienced plasterer, it really is a personal choice dependant on how you work.
